2014-06-05 Whitehorse - Haines, AK

The three units have the unwritten rule that we can sepperate any time we want and hook back up later. Dave and I exercised that option on the Whitehorse departure. The locals in Whitehorse recommended Haines over Skagway. Haines has only one cruise ship a week while Skagway was scheduled for three each day. We drove to Haines and felt we were in a wilderness town.

As you remember the truck and trailer were mud brown from the rain and log trucks. We stopped at the Alaskan Rig Wash and took care of business.

They are not "CLEAN - by Fischers standards", but they are not brown.
We pulled into the Oceanside RV Park. Sites are very tight for rigs with double slide. We were right on the water with a great view.

We drove up to Chilkoot Lake before 9 am and the wind picking up. We passed this fish counting station along the way.

All I can do is let the picture speak its 1000 words. WOW!

Yard decorations that do not ruin.

A view of our campsite. Our rig is last one on the right.
Everyone told us to go to the Hammer Museum. We thought it was closed when the curator pulled in 15 minutes late. He appologized because he had let the interns who normally open go on a jet boat ride because it was such a sun shinny day. We sure lucked out. Great story to tell.
Over 8000 hammers in inventory with 2000 on display.

Thursday when Dave and I pulled into the Oceanside RV park Haines, AK He meet Nancy and Steve but I was resting in side. They mentioned a fish fry on Friday night we while out we stopped at the packing house and purchased some fish.

Our final stop was the Eagle Preserve. Again we happened to meet the curator. What storries.

Taken from the campsite pick nick table.
Steve frying the fish on his walk.
Our Rockfish in the pan. We were told it was better than the Cod.
 Do you recognize the beans?

Two active Glaciers in the area.
Rainbow Glacier but I did not get to see it Calve.
The Sheldon Museum was closed but this made my day.

This is a copy from a FACEBOOK post I made. I am cheating because we need to pull out to make the 270 miles to hook up with Greg & Kate and Ron & Maxine.

Small World. Jan 2013, my first time at Quartzsite Hobo Bob and I stopped by the Escapees Christian campsite, which was near our Montana Circle, because there was a Marine flag flying. This lady came out to see if she could help us because we looked lost. The Marine was not there. This lady (I now know her name - Nancy) liked my new Dodge Ram 3500. I told her she could not appreciate it unless she was in the drivers seat. So she climbed in and sat there for over 20 mines. She did tell me an emotional, sentimental and healing story about loosing her brother in View Nam. She finally climbed down and Hobo Bob and I went on our way.

Yesterday Dave and I pulled into the Oceanside RV park Haines, AK. He meet Nancy and Steve but I was resting in side. This morning we went to Chilkoot Lake for beautiful pictures and they happened to pull in also. We talked about RVing etc and she mentioned Escapees. No light bulbs. They mentioned a fish cook out tonight so Dave and I got fish and I offered to make the BBQ beans. She had Rhubarb so we offered Strawberries to go with the crisp. When Nancy returned the remaining strawberries I mentioned Quartzsite and she said, "Your the guy with the red truck that I sat in!". My jaw dropped to the ground and I said yes. Go figure. Dave enjoyed the reaction and reunion 1.5 years later. Tonight after supper she told Dave her brothers story and we think we helped her with some closure.

SMALL WORLD.

  2. Despite being a vast wilderness, Haines does have breathtaking features, not to mention the by-the-water view on Oceanside. I love those panoramic views and all those green. That only means that even up north, summer is already in full swing. You capture the most amazing photographs, by the way. Till your next adventure!
